Learning IT

Learning is always good. That's my big motto for life. But here's a warning - be careful who you tell.

Getting IT training was the best thing I ever did on one level. It's something that I have always been interested in but till your do the training you feel there's more you could achieve, more you could get your hardware to do.

So learning more about IT is great, and quite liberating. You know that you have a skill that could get you a job anywhere.

You could enrol in one of the Cisco certification programs. I know people who work full-time in IT and doing more training her really helped them move on to better things within the industry. It's training that has moved them on to project management.

The only thing I would say, is if like me you don't work in IT but you just like learning, don't tell too many people, or like me you will find your inbox full of people's request for IT help.

If someone goes and learns about electrics in the spare time you wouldn't ask them to rewire your office, so why do people think IT knowledge comes for free?

I don't mind when it's something that they can't fix but I can, but more often than not it's "Hi Steve. My icon has gone off the desktop, what do I do?"

Although from now on I know what to say in the reply. "What you should do... is go on a training course so you know how to fix it."
