Another kick in the pants to the world of data protection. Reading into the report on identity theft I came across the bit where they say that the IRS rarely prosecutes identity thieves.
Why? Are you being precaution, just in case they've pulled an identity switch again and you're sending the wrong man down?
With very little working as a deterrent it's little surprise that there are so many cases of it. Why turn your back on the change to make money by nicking someone's identity when you don't even risk prison?
The same report said the number of fraudulent tax returns stemming from identity theft increased by nearly 600 percent from 2002 to 2007.
If something like that happened with the number of errors on your tax return they'd soon be all over you.
We need stricter rules and more prosecutions, but it's only going to get worse as more and more of the data that pertains to our lives gets stored on company PCs.
