Slowing Us Down For Money

Carmakers sell ever-faster cars yet speed cameras are making the authorities ever more money. Is there a conspiracy? Surely no one would sell you something just so they could get more money out of you, would they? Sadly it costs us more than money.

A study said speed cameras actually cause more accidents, and speed humps ruin your suspension, which increases stopping distance in a crash. Basically, it's making the roads more dangerous.

Desperate times indeed, so I'd like to take this opportunity to propose my desperate measure. Get rid of all cars, and let's drive Dodgems.

Before you scoff, think about it. If you're in an accident you don't have to pull over, exchange details and lose those precious 'no claims'; the guy you just shunted will simply turn round, give you the thumbs up and say, "Good one," and off he goes.

If you fall asleep at the wheel you'd soon wake up when you bounce off that lamppost. And even Maureen from Driving School would've passed first time.

OK, there would be some side-effects, like you'd always see one guy in the middle of the road just spinning round because he can't get the hang of the controls. You're dad would always try to drive even when he's in the passenger seat. And at any stage some unwashed bloke could hop on the back and tell you your time is up, but surely if my idea saves just one life then all of that is worth it.

On a different topic, I have a second-hand dodgem to sell if anyone wants it.
